The Negotium
(the etymology behind the name)
The Latin word “negotium” had acquired a positive meaning, corresponding to the English word “business”.
Pynchon intended to include many complications in the watch to assist young businessmen and young entrepreneurs to find each and every detail related to time, days, date, moon date, weeks, months, and season changes.

The watch shows mean (sun time), moon calendar, and a full calendar. All the information delivered is shown on the front of the watch, and indeed, it is a remarkably orderly and intelligently organized display.
The moonphase is shown in an aperture on six o'clock. The date aperture sits at three o'clock and the day aperture at nine o'clock.
